Welcome to Day 4 of the Coil Challenge!

Today we're covering two things:

1. Why you need to Hold the Ground & how to do it.

2. The Step Back Drill.

Why do you need to Hold the Ground?

The final phase of mastering the Back Leg Coil is Holding the Ground.

You've hip hinged, then you coiled, now you have to continue getting into your back into foot strike, all while holding the ground with your back leg.

We see so many hitters do those two things well, all to lose it during the forward move because they don't know how to hold the ground with their back leg.

Holding the ground ensures your using the ground to create power in your swing. 

It's also going to establish a good sequence and "unfolding" of your swing into foot strike.

How to Hold the Ground:

That hip coil that we worked on yesterday is a big part of it, so making sure you coil around that back foot is key to moving on to "holding the ground". 

The back foot should still be weighted in your heel through your forward move - this anchors you into the ground with that back leg.

Work on getting to foot strike still weighted in your heel and keeping that back knee "in place" - this is an over-exaggeration of the move, but it's key to learning how to do it properly. 

How to do the Step Back Drill:

Start with your feet close together towards the front of the box.

Take an athletic step back to the back of the box with your back foot (stay centered with your head over your belly button).

Once you are about to hit the ground with your back foot, get your front foot off of the ground into a loaded position.

You should feel very loaded into that back hip at this point. 

Now, make your forward move staying centered over your belly button, while maintaining the weight loaded in your back foot heel.
